Chris Malinn are co-coordinators of Brookline Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Team, which they formed in 2013 under former Police Chief Daniel O’Leary. The Department’s CIT represents a relatively new approach for dealing with individuals suffering from mental or behavioral health issues who come to the attention of law enforcement. Instead of confronting and arresting a person who shows signs of emotional distress, Brookline Police CIT members are trained to deescalate a situation and direct the person into treatment instead of jail when appropriate. Lt. Paster and Sgt. Malinn successfully applied for additional grant funding from DMH in 2016, and became the Technical Training Assistance and Training Center for Norfolk County. To date, and with the help of their Department Clinical Coordinator Annabel Lane, LICSW, they have trained members from 28 different agencies to recognize and respond better to calls for service involving people with mental illness.
